Vogue Festival 2013

Salvation. As you probably know from my various tweets of happiness, my exams have now finished! It hasn't actually sunk in yet that on Monday morning when I wake up, I won't have to go to the library all day and then feel sorry for my lack of a social life. As promised, here is a post about the event I went to two months ago known as Vogue Festival. I know this post is late, but I was revising and blogging won't be able to pay the bills in later life, but a good education will! I hope some of you feel motivated after that haha!

Before I give my review of the event, I would like to thank [not that they're going to read this], Alexandra Shulman and the British Vogue team for organising events such as Vogue Festival and Fashion's Night Out because I wouldn't be able to learn so much about the fashion industry, experience parts of it and being able to see just how things seem to work out in it. London may be considered the ugly step sister of the fashion capitals because we're full of new designers that can't afford a lot of advertising, but we do have amazing events and there are so many opportunities to listen and meet fashion legends which makes me love my city even more!

I'll leave my love for London at that, and re-focus my attention back to Vogue Festival!

Firstly, I'm not going to show you my outfit that I wore over the two days of the festival because deciding what to wear was an absolute nightmare. I'm sure you can sympathise with me and understand what's it like when nothing in your wardrobe fits you properly, you feel horrible and because you absolutely love your wardrobe MVP's so much, you wear them all the time, that they don't feel special and you just don't want to wear them. That is how I felt and I couldn't even find anything in my mum's wardrobe that I wanted to borrow. So Saturday and Sunday morning were terrible and I just felt sorry for myself at how pitiful my outfit was. I should have just gone with my nice, and comfortable clothes- JW Anderson for Topshop loafers, my Jil Sander's jumper and white Zara skirt would have been significantly better.

Anyway, the moral of my massive meltdown is to NOT try to be trendy and to simply wear the clothes that I like- it sounds like a simple mantra, and I always follow it, except whenever I go to fashion events I spend too long thinking about the outfit so that I look exponentially better than all the"UBER-cool" fashion students that wear sunglasses at night. There are so many faults with that way of thinking, that I'm going to write an article on body image and self-esteem that applies to the majority of girls my age- hint, the magazines have been grossly over-exaggerating and approach the issue from the wrong angle.

Street Style Observations at Vogue Festival

The ante stepped up about 10 notches when it came to people desperate to have their picture taken. I have never been to London Fashion Week [I WILL be invited to a Christopher Kane show one day, just wait.] but Vogue Festival gave me an idea of what Suzy Menkes was truly referring to when she complained about the show boaters standing around to gain some kind of reward for the hours they spent meticulously priming their outfits to perfection [unnecessarily narcissistic behaviour to put it frankly]. I noticed an absurd amount of people hanging around the venue on their phones with friends looking or "waiting" for someone whilst slyly trying to make very unsubtle eye-contact with the Topshop Street Style photographer. Before you call me a hypocrite because I waited outside the venue not doing anything productive, I arrived ten minutes before doors opened for the group of people attending the Alber Elbaz session so that I could get my picture taken at the Vogue cover shoot sponsored by Chanel in time as the queue was absurdly long the previous day.

Other style observations at Vogue Festival.

1) There was an obscene amount of "Comme Des Fuckdown" nonsense and it was disturbing to see that some people in what one would assume to be a dedicated fashion community think that such items are acceptable. Very worrying indeed.

2) I didn't realise that "Chanel" army jackets were a thing. If you read my article a while ago on "The Real Iconic Items to Fashion Blogging" then you would understand my aversion* to army jackets. If you're too lazy to read it, then I basically despise army jacket and novelty faux-designer clothing.

3) Not a disgusting amount of faddish Kenzo jumpers and t-shirts. RESULT- people need to remember that Kenzo is more than tiger jumpers!

Day 1 of Vogue Festival- Saturday

On Saturday I only attended the Natalie Massenet lecture as because I could not afford any other sessions and I had to be responsible and revise too. I thought that the talk would be about how she founded Net-A-Porter but adding a few personal aspects to change the story that everyone knows. I was very much mistaken and Ms Massenet actually talked to us about her life so far, and all of the different events and aspects which helped her found Net-A-Porter. Furthermore, she delivered her story in the most innovative and remarkable way, I have ever seen- via Instagram!

The night before, she acrually posted a picture on Instagram telling people to follow the account [@nataporter_mystorysofar] and all the requests would be accepted when the talk started at 12:30pm the following day. I followed the account thinking that there would be maybe 50 pictures with highlights from the talk, sort of like live "Instagraming" if that makes any sense to you? I was amazed that Ms Massenet had actually made an "Insta-slide" [don't worry, she didn't refer to it as an "Insta-slide", [as in "Insta-slideshow"] I'm just coining it as one, because that's what it is technically]. The talk was so inspirational and would have been valuable for any entrepreneur wanting to start something new in fashion, it also helped me gain some insight into life and the decisions I want to make in the future- I know, a fashion lecture causing me to have deep and meaningful thoughts about life in the bigger picture, weird! I'm not going to give you a summary of the talk, I want you to all learn something new and watch it here instead:

http://www.vogue.co.uk/special-events/vogue-festival-2013/news/saturday/natalie-massenet

I highly recommend watching it, and if you have the chance to ever hear Natalie Massenet, speak then I would strongly urge you to go! She's witty, intelligent and looks even more beautiful in real life- what's not to like?

Enjoy the pictures I took!
My seat was surprisingly good- I thought that the rear stalls would be on a completely different level relatively high up.

The calm before the storm.

The rest of Saturday...

I arrived about 15 minutes before the Natalie Massenet talk began, so I didn't have time to queue up for the fashion stalls or buy a mandatory Vogue Festival souvenir so I thought that I would just go back once I finished listening to Ms. Massenet.

Unfortunately, what I really wanted to do was the Chanel Cover Shoot and when I came out of the talk, the queue was still ridiculously long! However, I knew that the "How to shoot a Vogue Cover" talk was going to begin soon or the "Cara Delevingne talk" as all the "I-know-so-much-about-fashion-and-fashion-is-everything-to-me and-my-model-vocabulary-starts-from-Cara-Delevigne-and-ends-with-Poppy-Delevigne" fangirls dubbed it, [scary, how this was one of the first talks to sell out and the Alber Elbaz one was not] so I thought that the queue would become drastically shorter so I thought I would wait for a while.

No-one left the queue so I decided to go and get a smoky eye done at the Dior stall since the queue was significantly shorter and I genuinely wanted to see the results of a good smoky eye! The makeup turned out quite dark and I didn't really see the "smoky" effect that you can clearly see on all the Caucasian Hollywood stars which is what I wanted to see- this sounds like a job for Pat McGrath! But they gave out Dior samples in a really cute miniature Dior bag which suddenly made the disappointing make up a whole lot better- I have to say that the mascara was really good, I should have asked for the brighter smoky eye look instead and the artist was really lovely too!

Then I moved onto the Yves Saint Laurent lipstick stall [no free samples there unfortunately *sad face*] but I was in love with the two tone lip look they gave me! I asked for a plum colour as I'm on the hunt for a shade that's not too rich, but not too bright so I can "expanf my lipstick horizons"- really, I just want to channel my inner Chanel Iman backstage at Jason Wu S/S 09/10. I have no pictures of my makeup that day because I was having a self-confidence crisis and felt disgusting, but I hope my descriptions give you some sort of idea of what I looked like.

So that was Saturday!

Souvenir!

This will instantly make my mornings that much more chic.

This cup makes me feel like an editor.

The YSL lipsticks they used on me- I really need to go out and look for them.

Day 2 of Vogue Festival- Sunday

After my near disastrous outfit on Saturday, it didn't improve on Sunday- again, nothing in my wardrobe was good enough. You'll be able to see some of my outfit in some pictures below though, but please don't send me hate messages on Tumblr because I already know it's not pretty and I don't need another thing to cry about. I had been looking forward to the Alber Elbaz talk since he was announced as a speaker, if I had to choose one talk to go to, I would have chosen that one. My love for Lanvin is as boundless as the sea of white models that walk for Prada each season- I have a lot of feelings about Lanvin that cannot be measured.

Although I only have a porcelain doll; Miss Lanvin 24 to be exact, but I always look forward to seeing the collection and Mr Elbaz has a magnificent way with his tools and makes sensational garments for the woman's body. I love everything about Alber Elbaz and to be able to hear a living legend [in my eyes] speak, could not be missed! Pfft, Donatella who? ;)

I booked my ticket for the Alber Elbaz session the day after tickets went on sale, and I thought that I would only be able to get a ticket at the back at the hall, but to my surprise there were many tickets available and I managed to get a seat in the front stalls on row "E".

Again, I don't want to talk about the talk too much, because I would love for you to watch it instead and form your own judgement on what Alber had to say. I know it would be a lot easier for me to just summarise the talk and add a few pictures, but I feel like I would be doing you a disservice by not giving you he option to watch it. It's worth investing the time to watch it because you will actually learn something and it's hilarious!

Here is a link to the talk, from the Vogue website:

The rest of Sunday…

I saw Victoria Beckham entering her car and got a picture. I have nothing else, to say about the matter really, I don't have enough feelings about her to use poetic language and embellish the encounter- I only started liking her clothes when she stopped ripping off Roland Mouret or as she would probably call it "using his clothes for inspiration". Her designs have improved significantly and the silhouette on her dresses are very sleek and feminine- there are a few Victoria, Victoria Beckham dresses I have my eye on actually!

So, after not bothering to queue on Saturday to take part in the obligatory Chanel cover shoot [you cannot leave Vogue Festival without a picture from the cover shoot- YOU JUST CAN'T!] 10 minutes before the doors opened for the Alber Elbaz talk, assuming that would have been more than enough time. Unfortunately it was not enough time, however, in the queue I spotted David Gandy and Daisy Lowe taking pictures with a photographer for promotional uses I assume and this was actually the second time I've seen Daisy Lowe and David Gandy.

They shot a Vogue Italia editorial at my School a few years ago which she was featured in. I know, I still don't believe it ever happened because the thought is still surreal to me. I stalked the whole shoot and dressing room during break time like a creepy fan-girl and was too shy to speak to Miles Aldridge or Ms Lowe. I still mentally kick myself for not speaking to anyone there. I saw David Gandy walking along Bond Street at Fashion's Night Out in 2010 I believe? It could have been 2009...

So back to David Gandy and Daisy Lowe at Vogue Festival, and not at my School or on Bond Street! When people started to recognise them they started to crowd around the window to take pictures, then they decided to walk inside. Carnage ensued, [reminiscent of the time when I was in the first group to shop the MARNI for H&M and women were panic buying and grabbing everything and anything] then everyone started asking them for pictures. Being able to hold the Chanel Hula Hoop bag and do the cover shoot, was more important to me, so I didn't partake in the "gawking at Gandy" festivities.

BUT! David decided to grace the people waiting in the Chanel cover shoot queue with his presence. Me being an opportunist, decided to quickly step in front of his agent and shove my phone in his face with the front camera already on and ask in my most innocent voice "Excuse David, but could I get a picture with you?" He then replied with "Yes of course, but I have to hurry because I think they're starting to get angry with me" [referring to his PR people or Vogue team probably]. We took the picture together, then because the security or someone part of his team covered a portion of the photo, he said "no, it's not good enough, take it again" *internal squeal of delight* I personally, thought the picture was fine but I was happy to just nod and admire David Gandy for a little longer. So I ended getting TWO pictures with David Gandy!!!

After a few more minutes, I then had to leave the queue when they announced that people should take their seats for the session right before I was about to pay for the cover shoot. I just told myself that I would run out of the auditorium as soon as the Alber talk had finished so the queue wouldn't be too long. By the time I got back, the queue was still quite long and after a "we may run out of printing paper by the time your turn comes around so you might not be able to have your picture taken" scare, I finally got my picture taken!

Here is the result!

If you want to see the other photos that were chosen here is the link, and when you get to the page click on "view gallery" [I'm number 54 if you're interested] : http://www.vogue.co.uk/spy/celebrity-photos/2013/5/09/vogue-festival-covers-gallery-–-attendees-cover-shoot

I also took pictures of the other Chanel accessories on offer and got to play around with them for a bit, as I was one of the last few people taking a picture and I knew the stylist there, the fabulous Emma Elwick-Bates, she's the Style Editor for British Vogue and we met at Vogue's Fashion Night Out- follow her on Twitter and Instagram @emmaelwickbates she's so amazing.

With the end of the cover shoot, and me picking up the hard copy, Vogue Festival 2013 was over for me.

To conclude, Vogue Festival itself was a relatively nice experience, but the lectures themselves were absolutely fantastic and worth the money to a degree- a student discount would have been very appreciated Ms. Shulman! Thank you again, and I am very much looking forward to seeing who next year's speakers will be! [I'm placing my bets on Karl Lagerfeld and Naomi Campbell giving talks.]

Here are a few more pictures from Sunday for you to enjoy:

I preferred last year's hash tag of #VogueFest instead to be honest.

THE LEGO CLUTCH!!! I'm still dreaming of this bag till today, I don't have £5000 to spare, I haven't won the lottery yet and my mum doesn't like it so I can't convince her to buy it. It will be a good few years until I own a Chanel Lego clutch because when I do have the funds to buy expensive things for myself in the future, finding it on eBay will not be easy.

I feel like I'm part of the Vogue family :')

Karl should hire Emma and I to star in his new campaign. Can you see the amazingly cute Coco Chanel silhouette on the sunglasses? I would buy them if I had the money!

What a magnificent moment right?

Emma and I :)

Thank you for reading my Vogue Festival round-up!

Update: Apology

Oh gosh, where do I begin?

Firstly, I'd like to start this post with a very embarrassed and quick "hi everyone, sorry for the absence and sorry for repeating this message continually, I would just feel really stupid getting my results in August and feeling disappointed in myself for not sacrificing certain things for such a short time."

With my heartfelt apology over, I would like to remind you that on June 13th I will be free and summer officially begins for me. I'm actually really excited to start posting on my blog again because I have many thought-provoking and interesting articles that I'm excited to write! I planned to post a few things during the half-term but I was still relatively busy with revision so I couldn't! Next year during my AS Levels, I'm going to sort these things out well in advance so my blog isn't inactive for so long! I will blog that day and record a YouTube video either that day, or the day after. I solemnly swear to uphold those promises.

Thank you!

Peace and Love
